Frequently asked questions

Carry a reusable water bottle, snacks, sunscreen, sunglasses, a lightweight waterproof jacket and an extra clothing layer. A phone or camera is useful for navigation and photos, while a small first-aid kit and personal medication can be helpful on longer riding days. Keep your bag light and secure so it does not interfere with your balance. Your main luggage can stay with the luggage transfer service, allowing you to carry only the essentials you need between accommodation stops.

Start each day with a fully charged battery and adjust the assistance level to suit the terrain. Use lower assistance on flatter sections and save higher assistance for climbs or when you need extra support. Cold temperatures, strong headwinds and frequent use of maximum assistance can reduce battery range. Before departure, confirm the expected range of your hired e-bike and ask the operator about charging facilities and what to do if your battery runs low.

Wear comfortable cycling clothing and padded shorts for longer days in the saddle, along with closed-toe shoes suitable for pedalling and walking during stops. Central Otago can have cold mornings, warm afternoons and strong winds, so dress in removable layers and bring a lightweight waterproof jacket. Sunglasses, sunscreen and gloves are also useful, as much of the trail is exposed with limited shade.

Yes. Although the trail passes through small towns and settlements, there are stretches of open countryside where food outlets and other facilities are limited. Do not assume you will find a café or shop whenever you need a break. Before leaving each town, refill your water bottle, purchase snacks if necessary and check where the next reliable food stop is located. This is particularly important during warmer weather, when you may need more water than expected.
