Experience the Otago Central Rail Trail with Luxury Accommodation

Spend four days cycling New Zealand's original Great Ride, following the former Otago Central railway through gold-mining settlements, rocky gorges and the wide valleys of the Maniototo. Your holiday begins in Cromwell with a scenic speedboat transfer aboard the Lake Dunstan Explorer to Clyde, where you'll start cycling towards Alexandra. From here, follow the Otago Central Rail Trail past Chatto Creek, Omakau and Ophir before crossing the railway tunnels and viaducts of Poolburn Gorge.

Continue through Oturehua, Wedderburn, Ranfurly and Hyde before finishing in Middlemarch. Along the way, visit historic railway sites, explore Central Otago's small towns and try indoor curling in Naseby. The Grade 2 (Easy) trail follows a former railway line with gentle gradients and gravel surfaces, making it a good choice for recreational cyclists. With premium eBikes, three nights of luxury ensuite accommodation, luggage transfers and return transport to Cromwell included, you can enjoy the cycling by day and comfortable accommodation each evening.

Frequently asked questions

Pack comfortable cycling clothing, padded cycling shorts, sturdy closed-toe shoes and lightweight layers that you can add or remove throughout the day. Central Otago can experience significant temperature changes, so bring a waterproof and windproof jacket, warm layers for cooler mornings, sunglasses, sunscreen and a refillable water bottle. Padded gloves can also improve comfort on longer rides, while a small day bag is useful for snacks, personal medication and extra clothing. Since luggage transfers are included, keep your main bag organised and within the tour's luggage allowance of one bag per person weighing up to 15kg.

The best time to cycle the Otago Central Rail Trail is generally from spring to autumn (October to April), when milder temperatures and longer daylight hours make exploring Central Otago more comfortable. Spring brings fresh greenery and blooming landscapes, while summer offers warmer riding conditions and autumn showcases golden poplar trees and colourful countryside. As the region has a continental climate, temperatures can vary significantly throughout the day, with cool mornings, strong sunshine and occasional wind or rain. For the most enjoyable experience, dress in layers, carry sun protection and check the weather forecast before each ride.

The Otago Central Rail Trail passes through small rural settlements where cafés, country pubs and local eateries offer opportunities to stop for refreshments and meals. You can enjoy a traditional country pub lunch at Chatto Creek Hotel, take a coffee break in Ranfurly or visit Waipiata Country Hotel, which is known for its generously sized pies. However, food outlets can be limited in smaller settlements, and opening hours may vary depending on the season and day of the week. It is a good idea to plan your lunch stops in advance, carry snacks and bring enough water for each day's ride. Your tour includes three breakfasts and two dinners, so check your daily arrangements and budget for any additional meals, café stops and drinks.

Your main luggage is transferred between overnight accommodation locations, allowing you to enjoy each day's ride without carrying a heavy bag on your e-bike. The tour includes luggage relocation for one bag per person weighing up to 15 kg, with storage available in Cromwell for any excess luggage. During the ride, carry a small day bag with essentials such as water, snacks, sunscreen, a waterproof jacket and personal items you may need along the trail. It is best to pack your daily necessities separately and keep valuables, medication and anything you need immediate access to with you while cycling.
