Frequently asked questions

Our trips are designed to be enjoyable holidays that anyone in reasonable health and fitness can undertake. Each trip is graded to help you choose the right level of challenge. We recommend reviewing our grading system and speaking with our team to understand the physical requirements of your chosen trip.

What should I pack?

New Zealand’s weather is unpredictable, so bring waterproof gear and plenty of layers. Polyester, wool, or nylon fabrics are best, as they dry quickly and provide warmth. Avoid cotton, which retains moisture. We’ll provide a full gear list with your pre-departure information.

Can I bring my own equipment?

Yes! You’re welcome to bring your own bike, pedals, seat, walking poles—whatever makes you comfortable. Just let our team know in advance.

Our guided trips offer an immersive experience with expert guides who stay with you from start to finish. You’ll travel with a small group of like-minded adventurers (maximum of 14 people), and groups of 8 or more will have two guides—one cycling with you and one driving the support vehicle. Our trips include:

  • Accommodation
  • Most meals and snacks
  • A support vehicle
  • Pre-trip departure information
  • Maps and itinerary details

If you need a break from cycling, our support vehicle will be available at the next access point, offering a chance to rest with tea or coffee.

What is the accommodation like?

We’ve carefully selected 3–4 star family-run motels, lodges, heritage accommodations, farm stays, backcountry huts, and hotels. Each trip page provides specific details about where you’ll stay.

Many of our Cycle Trail trips are great for families with children over two years old. We can usually provide bike trailers (max weight 40–60kg) and trail-a-bikes for kids aged 4–9. Discounts are often available for children under 15 when sharing a room. Contact us to discuss your family’s needs.
