Cycle the full length of New Zealand’s iconic Alps to Ocean trail on this 6-day guided adventure. Starting in Tekapo, ride past turquoise hydro lakes, through Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park, and into the golden Mackenzie Basin. Stargaze under world-renowned night skies and enjoy short walks with views of the Southern Alps.

The journey continues through the Waitaki Valley to historic Oamaru, with stops for wine tasting, Māori rock art, and natural hot pools along the way. With expert guides, support vehicle, and charming local accommodation, this is the ultimate way to explore South Island’s landscapes at a relaxed, scenic pace.

  • Fitness & Trail Conditions: The tour is graded moderate (3), requiring a reasonable level of fitness. Daily cycling distances average 60 km, with the longest day up to 80 km. The trail consists of compacted gravel (45%), sealed roads (30%), gravel roads (18%), and rough shingle (6%), with some sections featuring switchbacks and narrow tracks.
  • Bike Options: Guests can bring their own bike or hire one. Electric bikes and hybrid mountain bikes are available for rent to suit different riding preferences.
  • Weather & Packing: South Island weather can be unpredictable, so packing for variable conditions is essential. Riders should bring warm layers, waterproof gear, and sun protection.
  • Optional Activities: Experiences such as hot pools in Omarama and a visit to Steampunk HQ in Oamaru are available at an additional cost.
  • Group Size & Guides: Once the group reaches eight or more riders, two expert guides will be provided to ensure the best experience.
  • Bike & Helmet Hire: Guests can bring their own bike or rent an electric or hybrid mountain bike for an additional cost.
  • Beverages & Extra Meals: Drinks (other than those included with breakfast) and any additional meals not mentioned in the itinerary.
  • Water Bottle: Guests are encouraged to bring their own reusable water bottle to reduce waste.
  • Optional Activities: Experiences like hot tubs in Omarama and the Steampunk HQ museum in Oamaru are available at an extra cost.
  • Personal Expenses: Costs such as phone calls, internet, laundry, and shopping are not included.
  • Travel Insurance: Not provided but strongly recommended to cover unexpected changes or emergencies.

What should I pack?

New Zealand’s weather is unpredictable, so bring waterproof gear and plenty of layers. Polyester, wool, or nylon fabrics are best, as they dry quickly and provide warmth. Avoid cotton, which retains moisture. We’ll provide a full gear list with your pre-departure information.

Can I bring my own equipment?

Yes! You’re welcome to bring your own bike, pedals, seat, walking poles—whatever makes you comfortable. Just let our team know in advance.

Our guided trips offer an immersive experience with expert guides who stay with you from start to finish. You’ll travel with a small group of like-minded adventurers (maximum of 14 people), and groups of 8 or more will have two guides—one cycling with you and one driving the support vehicle. Our trips include:

What is the accommodation like?

We’ve carefully selected 3–4 star family-run motels, lodges, heritage accommodations, farm stays, backcountry huts, and hotels. Each trip page provides specific details about where you’ll stay.

Many of our Cycle Trail trips are great for families with children over two years old. We can usually provide bike trailers (max weight 40–60kg) and trail-a-bikes for kids aged 4–9. Discounts are often available for children under 15 when sharing a room. Contact us to discuss your family’s needs.
