Discover the Port Hills on a Private Guided Packhorse Hut Tour

The day begins with a drive through the Port Hills, stopping at three historic “rest houses”—the Sign of the Takahe, Sign of the Kiwi, and Sign of the Bellbird. Each stop offers incredible views across Christchurch, Lyttelton Harbour, and the coastline, with time for photos and a morning tea break. From here, the journey continues south along Summit Road to Gebbies Pass, the starting point for your guided walk.

The trail to Packhorse Hut passes through farmland and forest before opening out into sweeping tussock grasslands with views over Lyttelton Harbour and Quail Island. Along the way, you’ll see unique volcanic rock formations known as the Remarkable Dykes before reaching the historic hut itself. After a picnic-style lunch and time to relax or explore, the walk returns to Gebbies Pass, with the journey back to Christchurch following a scenic coastal route through Governors Bay.
