Private Packhorse Hut Guided Day Tour

The journey begins with a drive up Christchurch’s Port Hills, passing through the leafy suburb of Cashmere to the first stop at the historic Sign of the Takahe. From here, the route continues to the Sign of the Kiwi, where sweeping views stretch across the city and towards Lyttelton Harbour. Heading further along Summit Road, you’ll pause at the Sign of the Bellbird for morning tea before continuing on to Gebbies Pass at the southern end of the harbour.

Your walk starts at Gebbies Pass, winding through open farmland before entering shaded pine forest. After around 45 minutes, the track emerges into tussock grasslands with panoramic views of Lyttelton Harbour and Quail Island. Passing volcanic rock formations known as the Remarkable Dykes, the trail leads to the historic Packhorse Hut, where your guide will prepare a picnic lunch. After time to relax, take photos, or explore the area, the return walk retraces the track to Gebbies Pass. The day ends with a coastal drive through Governors Bay before heading back over the Port Hills and returning to Christchurch.
