This self-guided mountain bike hire departs from Days Bay for a coastal ride towards Pencarrow Head, its historic lighthouses and lakes. Bikes are available daily, with 2, 4 or 8-hour hire options for exploring at your own pace. Hire includes a comfort mountain bike, helmet, repair kit, carrier rack and pannier, and suits recreational riders from 110–190 cm tall wanting a flexible Wellington coastal cycling experience.

Cycle the Coast from Days Bay to Pencarrow Head

Set off from Days Bay and follow the eastern shoreline of Wellington Harbour, leaving the city behind as the route becomes increasingly wild and open. Pencarrow Head is the natural goal for a shorter ride, combining sweeping harbour and Cook Strait views with two historic lighthouses and the freshwater lakes of Kohangapiripiri and Kohangatera. The largely traffic-free route and comfortable bikes make it easy to stop for photographs, a picnic or simply to enjoy the coastal scenery.

With a longer hire, continue beyond the main Pencarrow sights towards Fitzroy Bay and explore more of this rugged coastline. Along the way, look for remnants of the area’s maritime past, including the wreck of the SS Paiaka, or leave time on the return journey for Eastbourne’s cafés, galleries and beaches. Because the ride is self-guided, you can choose your own turnaround point and shape the day around your fitness, interests and available time.
