Great Taste Trail multi-day bike rides explore Nelson Tasman over three to seven days. Choose independent cycling with local support, from boutique coastal escapes to longer inland itineraries and e-bike holidays. The featured packages include accommodation, luggage transfers and bike hire, with routes, meals and transfers varying by tour.

Coastal Views, Cellar Doors and Time to Unwind

Make your next cycling holiday as much about the stops as the scenery. Starting from Nelson, Great Taste Trail itineraries connect estuary boardwalks, coastal paths and welcoming communities. Ride through Rabbit Island, explore the cafés and galleries around Māpua Wharf, or follow orchard-lined routes towards Motueka and Kaiteriteri.

Inland journeys reveal another side of Nelson Tasman, with hop gardens, river valleys, rural villages and the historic Spooners Tunnel. Along the way, local wineries, breweries and artisan food producers provide tempting reasons to pause. Choose a holiday that gives you the right balance of riding, exploring and settling into comfortable accommodation each evening.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. The ferry carries cyclists and their bikes between Rabbit Island and Māpua Wharf, and its timetable forms part of your riding day. Confirm the operating days and final crossing during your trip briefing, particularly outside the main summer season. Allow time for café stops and sightseeing while still reaching the ferry for your planned connection.

Yes. If your itinerary includes Spooners Tunnel, you will need a suitable bike light or headlamp and an extra layer for warmth. The former railway tunnel is approximately 1.4 km long and remains dark and cool throughout the year. Confirm what lighting your operator provides before setting off. Both the Delight and Explorer itineraries feature the tunnel.

Yes, and the allowance varies between packages. For example, the Great Taste Trail Delight tour specifies a maximum weight of 15 kg per bag. Confirm the permitted number, size and weight of bags before travelling. Keep your water, medication, valuables and an extra clothing layer with you during the ride, as your main luggage travels separately.

Mobile coverage varies, with blackspots on some rural sections. Download your route information before leaving and ask your operator how to access maps without a mobile signal. Carry a charged phone, keep the local support number handy and consider a small power bank. The Great Taste Trail Explorer tour page includes further practical information about riding independently.
