North Island

Explore the Far North from Kaitaia’s Laid-back Hub

As the northernmost town of any size in Aotearoa, Kaitaia is a gateway to some of New Zealand’s most iconic and remote landscapes. It’s the launching point for day tours to Cape Rēinga, where the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific Ocean, and a great place to experience Māori culture, Far North hospitality, and dramatic west coast beaches.

The town itself has a relaxed, small-town vibe with friendly locals, weekend markets and a handful of quirky shops and cafés. It also marks the start (or end) of Te Araroa, the national walking trail, making it a significant point for hikers and road trippers alike.

Beaches, Forests and Cultural Journeys

A short drive from Kaitaia takes you to Ninety Mile Beach, a wild stretch of sand that’s officially a highway and unofficially a playground for surfing, quad biking and sunset walks. Guided tours often include Te Paki sand dunes, where you can try sandboarding before continuing to Cape Rēinga’s iconic lighthouse.

To the east, the Herekino and Ahipara Forests offer peaceful walking tracks, native bush and birdlife, while local marae visits and cultural centres provide insight into the history and traditions of Te Tai Tokerau Māori. Whether you’re in town for a night or a few days, there’s plenty to explore.
