The mostly flat terrain meanders along the river's edge, offering wide views of the Waikato River, farmland, and regenerating native bush. A short detour takes you to the Te Awa River Ride, which runs parallel for part of this section. The town of Cambridge is nearby, with plenty of options for food, coffee, and accommodation.

Arapuni Section – 36 km | Moderate to Advanced | Forest & Bridges

Running from Arapuni Dam to Waipapa Dam, this is the longest and most challenging stretch of the trail. Expect more climbs, narrow tracks, and thrilling forested descents. Riders cross the impressive Arapuni Swing Bridge, with sweeping views of the river below, and pass the historic Arapuni Power Station. The lush environment is home to native birdlife and peaceful bushland. The quirky town of Tirau is close by for refreshments or an overnight stop.

Waipapa Section – 12 km | Moderate | Remote Bush Track

This lesser-known segment offers a more rugged and immersive ride through dense native bush between Waipapa Dam and Jones Landing. With narrower paths and steeper gradients, it’s better suited for confident riders seeking solitude and a close connection with nature. This section rewards with peace, birdsong, and forest views. Tokoroa is the nearest hub for supplies or overnight stays.

Maraetai Section – 16 km | Easy to Moderate | Lakeside Trail

Starting from the Mangakino Lakefront, this trail travels past pine plantations and follows the lake’s edge to the Whakamaru Dam. It’s a relatively smooth ride with wide paths and moderate elevation changes, perfect for casual cyclists and e-bike users. The tranquil waters, spillways, and viewpoints make this section especially photogenic. Mangakino offers a friendly local vibe, plus cafés and accommodation options.

Whakamaru Section – 14 km | Easy | Scenic & Serene

The final section of the trail stretches from Whakamaru Dam to Atiamuri Dam and is a peaceful ride suitable for all fitness levels.
