Southern Hospitality, Scenic Trails and Local Flavour

Bluff New Zealand is the South Island’s southernmost town, offering windswept beauty, rich cultural history, and some of the best seafood in the country. While it’s famously home to the Stirling Point signpost and the ferry to Stewart Island, it also hosts one of New Zealand’s quirkiest and tastiest events: the annual Bluff Oyster Festival.

Held each May, the festival draws foodies from across the country to sample freshly harvested Bluff oysters, alongside other local fare, live music and spirited southern hospitality. Outside festival season, you can walk the Bluff Hill/Motupōhue Track, explore Te Rau Aroha Marae, or simply enjoy a plate of oysters at a local café with views across the harbour.

Marine Encounters and the Edge of the Scenic Route

Bluff is also known for wild ocean experiences. Those seeking an adrenaline rush can go shark cage diving to see great white sharks off the coast—a rare and exhilarating adventure unique to this part of New Zealand. For a more peaceful outing, Oreti Beach and the harbour are ideal for seal spotting and seabird watching.

A key stop on the Southern Scenic Route, Bluff is both an end and a beginning—perfect for starting a coastal road trip through The Catlins or reflecting on a journey completed. And of course, it’s the jumping-off point for ferry crossings to Stewart Island/Rakiura, where even more nature and adventure await.
