The walk is rated easy to moderate, with around 10 km of walking on coastal and ridgeline tracks. Comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots with good grip are recommended.

The walking section begins near Taylors Mistake Beach after pick-up in Christchurch and a stop in Sumner. The route explores the Crater Rim area around Godley Head and Banks Peninsula.
