No. The penguins are wild, and sightings depend on the season and their natural behaviour. The tour includes monitored nesting sites and sheltered viewing areas to provide the best responsible viewing opportunities.

The breeding season from late August to December generally offers the strongest viewing opportunities. Penguin activity becomes more variable during summer and winter, and the colony is usually quiet from late February to early April.

The minimum age is two years. Children must be supervised and comfortable travelling on winding 4WD roads and walking over uneven ground in an outdoor wildlife area.

The full experience lasts approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. Departure times vary according to sunset and are confirmed for the selected travel date.

Check-in takes place at the Akaroa office before scenic 4WD transport to the accommodation at Pōhatu Bay.

The overnight package includes transport from Akaroa, a private sleeping unit, linen, communal kitchen and bathroom facilities, a visit to Akaroa Heads, an optional forest walk and a seasonal evening penguin tour.

Yes. The accommodation is self-catering, so guests need enough food and snacks for the overnight stay. A communal kitchen with cooking equipment, fridges, tea and coffee is provided.

A complimentary evening penguin tour is included when it is operating and penguins are present in season. Wildlife sightings depend on natural behaviour and cannot be guaranteed.

Yes. A discounted guided sea-kayaking safari can usually be added the following morning, subject to weather, sea conditions and participant suitability.
