Two to three days is ideal for most first-time visitors to Rotorua. Two days gives you enough time for a geothermal attraction, Māori cultural experience and one forest, lake or adventure activity. Three days allows a more relaxed pace and extra time for hot pools, wildlife experiences or outdoor activities. A one-day visit is possible, but it will feel more rushed.

Yes, parts of Rotorua have a noticeable sulphur smell because of the region’s natural geothermal activity. It is often described as similar to rotten eggs and can be stronger around geothermal areas or depending on the weather. Most visitors quickly become accustomed to it, and the smell is not equally strong throughout Rotorua.

No, you can visit Rotorua without a car, particularly if you stay centrally and book tours or activities that include transfers. However, having a vehicle makes it easier to reach geothermal parks, lakes and attractions outside the city centre and gives you more flexibility when exploring the wider region.

Swimming is possible at selected Rotorua lakes and beaches, but conditions and water-quality advice should always be checked before entering the water. Some lakes and waterways are affected by geothermal activity, environmental conditions or temporary health warnings, so follow local signage and current advice

Rotorua can be visited on a day trip from Auckland, but the approximately three-hour journey each way makes for a long day. An organised coach tour can simplify transport and may include Hobbiton or other attractions along the way. Staying at least one or two nights gives you considerably more time to experience Rotorua.
